When researching ways to save money on travel, you’ve no doubt come across the same pieces of advice: save up rewards points, use a cheaper foreign money transfer service, don’t eat out, and stay in hostels instead of hotels to name a few things.
But easily one of the biggest expenses of travel is the cost of airfare. In nearly the last ten years, the average price of an airline ticket domestically has risen dramatically, and the price is only looking to increase in the future thanks to the rising cost of jet fuel.
Fortunately, there are ways to save money on airfare so you’ll end up spending much less than you otherwise would have.
Here are four tips for saving money on the cost of airfare:
#1 – Take Two Flights Instead Of One
Sometimes it will be cheaper to take two flights versus taking one flight to the same destination.
For example, it may cost you $2,000 o get from Point A to Point B for a single flight, but there might be another option where you can take two flights to get to the same destination at $1,000 and $500 respectively.
Simply doing your research on the cheaper tickets could help you to save several hundred dollars per flight.
#2 – Get Free Checked Luggage
Checked luggage will usually cost around $25 for the first bag, $35 for the second, and then anywhere from $75 and up for the third and subsequent bags. That’s a lot of money, but you may not have to spend any of it if instead you instead go with an airline that offers you free checked luggage.Southwest Airlines, for example, offers two checked bags.
#3 – Book Flights During Cheaper Months
The absolute worst times to fly, both in terms of the high cost and the large crowds, is in the summer and winter. July, August, and December in particular are the three most expensive months of the year when it comes to air travel.
You’ll save a lot of money on air travel by instead traveling during months of the year that are the cheapest. January, February, and September, for instance, are typically the cheapest months ot travel.
#4 – Book Flights During Cheaper Days of the Week
Not only is it cheaper to fly during select times of the year, but it also will be to travel during select days of the week too.
On average, Mondays, Fridays, and Sundays are the busiest times to fly and therefore the most expensive, but Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and even Saturdays are typically less busy and therefore you should be able to find cheaper prices.
