Human beings themselves feel helpless. All around us is chaos. It seems like at a moments notice things can come shattering down before us and change the course of our lives. Entropy is part of society, part of nature. The news is rather toxic. We often ask ourselves what are the things we can do that can help? To think that one small act can somehow have a positive effect on someone or something half a world away is just too broad a thought. If we break it down to the small scale, it makes it easier to digest.
What can I do in my everyday environment that will help the human race on a broader scale? Don’t be so quick to say nothing. Mother Teresa once said:
“Stay where you are. Find your own Calcutta. Find the sick, the suffering and the lonely right there where you are — in your own homes and in your own families, in your workplaces and in your schools. … You can find Calcutta all over the world, if you have the eyes to see. Everywhere, wherever you go, you find people who are unwanted, unloved, uncared for, just rejected by society — completely forgotten, completely left alone.”
This woman was completely ahead of her time.
Here are some thoughts of mine to help break it down on a smaller scale. Let’s keep it simple:
• Turn off the lights when you’re not in the room.
• Recycle whatever you can.
• Be kind to your neighbors and assist those around you in need. You never know what the person next door may be going through and they may need some help. Talk to them. Befriend them.
• Get outside. Take a walk. Ride a bike. Just take it all in. I know nature acts like one giant “reset” button for me.
• Respect nature. This planet has a soul and a breath. It beats to it’s own drum. We all have our own rhythm inside of us; it’s called circadian rhythm. Try to connect with that visceral part of yourself.
• Truly connect with those around you. Put down your phone, turn off the TV, and have a conversation with the person in front of you.
• Take 10 minutes just for yourself each and everyday.
• Give thanks. Whatever your belief and whomever you pray to, even if you’re an atheist, give thanks to your body that allows you to walk through this life. Give thanks to the presence within that urges you to take a breath, and your next breath, and the one after that. Our bodies are run on autopilot, but we can pay attention and tap into that. We can become the observer and discover those ancient parts of ourselves.
• Love something outside of yourself.
• Whatever is your profession, do your best. I don’t care if you are a physician or someone who cleans up garbage. Recognize that the work that you do is valuable because we all make up the parts of this society that are needed to function.
• Don’t speak ill will of someone. Try not to participate in the negativity. It’s so easy to get caught up in that moment and ride the negative train. I’ve done it. Sometimes it feels good to go there. However, it just adds to the pollution out there. There are more than just environmental toxins; there truly is toxic energy just waiting for someone to tap into it and run with it. Instead, elevate your thoughts. Rise above that urge to dive into to someone else’s pain.
• Most of all, love. Love absolutely. Love is the most pure and the most divine.
I don’t know exactly what moved me to write this today, but something did. I felt compelled, and I feel compelled to share it with the world. I have a platform to get this out there with WannaSmile, so I will post it on here. I still love the silly cats and all those things that make us smile. But there is a lot more stirring under the surface here that is causing me to smile these days. I wanted to share it with you.
