Going to college is not just about learning the ins and outs of your chosen major, it is also about having a unique experience and preparing yourself for the real world. During your time at college it makes a great deal of sense to invest your time not only in your studies, but also extracurricular activities which are going to give you a great experience and which are also going to look great on your CV. Carter Boyle Duke senior spends a lot of time with young Duke university freshmen trying to get this message across, and we caught up with him to see what kind of activities he was steering Duke students towards.

Debate Club

The debate club is a great activity which will help you to improve your public speaking, push you into making decisions on hot topics and engaging in healthy conversation with people who disagree with you. The debate society is also something which looks very impressive on a resume as anyone taking part in these debates is someone with confidence and candor.

Sports Team

Carter loves Duke basketball team the Blue Devils and the university on the whole is very dedicated towards its sports teams. This is something which you can also get a lot of value from, no matter which team it is that you choose. Doing sports can help you to keep fit, make friends and build your character, it is also helps  you to work in a team setting, something which future employers will love.

Student Board

Student boards have been set up in many colleges around the country to give the power back to students about a range of issues which affect them. To be on the student council you need to have confidence, courage, responsibility skills and you must also know how to speak to people. All of the characteristics which you need to attain such a position are the same as the skills which you’ll need in a high level job, and this is something which will help you immeasurably, now and in the future.

Community Outreach

In colleges up and down the country there are groups of students who have gotten together in order to help in the local community. These men and women do amazing work and most importantly they are doing it out of the goodness of their own hearts. Whilst you should never contribute to a group such as this with any other intention than helping out, it is something which can help you in the future. Being selfless and prepared to help those in need is a wonderful quality to have and it will help you to grow as a person, as well as being able to help you in the future when you are trying to show people what kind of person you are.

These extracurricular activities look impressive on the resume and you can get a great amount of personal satisfaction from doing them.
